Step 1. Get ready before the visit
Secure doors and windows, move vehicles, gather ID/letter details, and plan how you’ll speak through the door.
What a bailiff can and can’t do
- They can only visit between 6am and 9pm, excluding Sundays and bank holidays.
- They cannot force entry unless collecting certain debts (like criminal fines or HMRC debts).
- They must show you ID and explain who they are acting for.
- They cannot take essential household goods, clothing, or basic tools of your trade.
Checklist before the bailiff arrives
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Move vehicles into a garage or park away from the home.
- Keep letters or notices handy if you need to question validity.
- Plan to speak through the door — never open it unless you are certain of your rights.
When they knock
Stay calm and do not open the door. Speak through a window, letterbox, or simply through the closed door. Ask for ID and paperwork to be shown.
You are not obliged to let them in or sign any documents.
